Crispy Churros Recipe | With or Without Egg

Crispy, yet soft, rolled in sugar or dipped in chocolate. However you like to enjoy them, these Mexican donuts are guaranteed to be a hit with everyone!

I love making donuts, I love eating donuts.

Churros are Mexican donuts, a kind of donut that is shaped long like a star and is rolled in cinnamon sugar or dipped into a chocolate sauce. These donuts are unleavened, which means that there is no baking powder or yeast, or any kind of leavening product in them. The dough is the same as a traditional choux pastry which is used to make things like eclairs and profiteroles. However, instead of baking it, we are going to fry it to make these delicious churros!

For a more traditional-style donut recipe that also doesn’t take longer than an hour to make, check out my Instant Yeast Donuts Recipe.

What are the ingredients needed to make Homemade Churros?
  • 1 cup water,
  • 2 1/2 tbsp sugar,
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil or melted butter,
  • 1/2 tsp salt,
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla essence,
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (maida),
  • 1 egg, beaten (optional)*

You can make churros with or without egg. They provide slightly different but equally delicious results. Texture is the main difference between the two. Adding an egg makes the inside softer and more donut-like while making churros without egg makes them extra crispy. We love both versions so you’ll just have to try it out and see!

How to make Churros at home?

Here’s how to make churros at home:

  1. Combine water, sugar, oil, and salt in a saucepan and place it on the stove. Let the mixture boil and remove from heat.
  2. Add the vanilla essence and flour and mix until everything comes together. (The mixture should come away from the pan without sticking too much).
  3. Let it cool completely. Mix the beaten egg into the batter if using.
  4. Fit a piping bag with a star or rose tip and fill it with the batter.
Tip: Do not overfill the bags.
  5. Heat some oil for frying and let it come up to temperature.
  6. Pipe the churros into the hot oil at any desired length.
Tip: Use a knife or scissors to cut the batter.
  7. Fry them until they turn golden brown and remove to a plate lined with paper.
How to Serve Homemade Churros

Traditionally, these donuts are rolled around in cinnamon sugar or dipped in chocolate. However, you can whatever you like with them. I love dusting some icing sugar over them or serving them with a mocha dipping sauce (I show you how to make it in the video below). Or you can dress them up with some melted chocolate and pretty sprinkles!

Watch me make churros in the video below. (Note: I show you how to make eggless churros here.)
