How to Make Peanut Butter at Home

Making your peanut butter at home is so easy that it only takes a few minutes of effort! Plus, you get to control what goes into it, which I assume is none of the plethoras of additives and preservatives that you can find listed behind your store-bought jar of peanut butter.

Is Peanut Butter Good for You?

Yes!

When my baby was old enough to have food, I would look for things I could make for him that were nutritious but also easy to fix. Peanuts are high in protein, magnesium, Vitamin B6 and so many other essential vitamins and minerals.

Most store-bought peanut butters, as I said, have so many ingredients – most of them not very good for your health. Making peanut butter at home gives you all the good without any of the bad.

How to make Peanut Butter at home?

When I posted on my Instagram stories that I had made peanut butter at home, there were so many who asked me how I did it and if I could share the recipe. As I told them, there’s really no “recipe” for it. But, here’s a comprehensive guide to making your own peanut butter at home, complete with all the tips and tricks that I’ve gathered.

  1. Roast it.
  2. Blend it.
  3. Eat it.

Can I add Anything to my Homemade Peanut Butter?

From this point, you can add a wide array of things to flavour your peanut butter such as salt, sweeteners, oils, or anything else you can think of.

I recommend adding a pinch of salt to enhance the flavour, and a tiny drizzle of oil to loosen the peanut butter a bit, but as I said, it is optional. If you plan on adding anything that needs a bit more blending, like other nuts or dates, you can go ahead and add them right at the beginning.

Can you Make Chunky Peanut Butter at home?

Absolutely! Just reserve some of the nuts before blending and add them in at the end! You can customize how chunky you want them to be too. Either leave them whole or remove some after a couple pulses in the beginning.

Can I make Almond/Cashew/Walnut/(Insert Other Nut) At Home?

Yes, this recipe, or rather, the process can be applied to any of your favourite nuts.

How to Store Homemade Peanut Butter?

Since we’re not adding anything else, in theory, it should be fine at room temperature. But since it’s homemade and we handle it without gloves, etc. I would say it’s safer to store it in the fridge.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to make homemade peanut butter.

Homemade Peanut Butter

Prep Time: 10 mins

Cook Time: 0

Serves: –

Step 1: Roast the peanuts.

  • Raw peanuts (any quantity, I recommend starting with 500g for a small jar of peanut butter)
  1. Roast the peanuts in one of two methods:
    In the oven: place the peanuts in a single layer on a baking sheet and place in a 150° C oven for 10-15 minutes until they turn darker in colour.
    On the stovetop: place your peanuts on a wide-bottom pan and cook for about 10-15 minutes on low heat, stirring frequently, until they turn darker in colour.
    When the peanuts are roasted, they will still be a little soft when they are warm but harden once cool.

Optional Step: Remove the skins.

  1. While they are still warm, rub the peanuts between your palms to remove the skin.
    Note: this is a bit of a time-consuming step, but it is absolutely NOT necessary. In fact, I usually skip it.

Step 2: Blend the peanuts.

  • Roasted nuts,
  • Optional add-ins (recommended, splash of oil and pinch of salt)
  1. Place the nuts and any add-ins in the blender while still slightly warm and blitz. First, it will turn powder-like, keep blending until it becomes creamy and smooth.

Notes

– If you buy plain roasted peanuts, you can skip the entire first step.
– The weight of the nuts reduces a lot once roasted, so keep that in mind when buying the raw kind.
– Keep in mind that it will thicken when placed in the fridge.
