Sweet, spicy, salty, so, so, sticky - they'll make you go ssss!

I’m calling these the SSSS wings because they are sweet, spicy, salty, so, so, sticky, and ssssss is the sound you’ll be making while you eat them!

The best part is that they are super easy to make and guilt-free because they are baked! Well, not entirely, but let me have my moment, will ya?

Look, I’m at that point in my life where I don’t have time to be fussing around the kitchen too long. With a toddler running around my knees, I need to get things done as quick as possible. But I still want to eat good food; that is always a priority. I’m also trying to eat food that isn’t as, ahem, deep-fried. So, when I made this recipe on a whim and it tasted like it did, I felt like I’d found a pot of gold!

I’ve since made this nearly every single week. Yes, I love it that much. Not just for how good they taste, but for how fuss-free they are to make!

How to Make Baked Chicken Wings?

There are only 2 steps to this recipe (3, but step number 1 can be eliminated), so we’re left with:

  1. Marinate chicken.
  2. Bake chicken.

Oh, and let’s not forget the most important step of them all: put on a bib and get down to business with ‘em wings!

What to serve with Sticky Chicken Wings?

These wings cook in a marinade that ends up getting nice and sticky, which means you really don’t need anything else to dip them into. But if you feel like it, you can serve them with anything you fancy. Something like a cheese dip, a yogurt dip, or a mayo sauce would be fantastic. I have served them with the garlic mayo sauce here (click here for the recipe).

So, let’s get on with the step-by-step recipe for these baked sticky chicken wings.

Baked Sticky Chicken Wings

Prep Time: 10 min

Cook Time: 30 min

Serves: 2-3

Step 1: Make sweet soya sauce.

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar,
  • 1/4 cup soya sauce
  1. Place both ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil, ensuring the sugar has melted. Simmer for 4-5 minutes, remove from heat and let it cool.
Note: if you can buy sweet soy sauce, which is a thicker, sweeter version of the regular kind, you can skip this step and use ¼ cup of it instead.

Step 2: Marinade chicken.

  • 3 tsp ginger/garlic paste,
  • 3 tsp tomato paste,
  • 1 tsp chili powder,
  • 1 tsp red chili flakes,
  • 2 tbsp ketchup,
  • 10 chicken wings (approx. 600g)
  1. Combine the cooled down soya sauce with the rest of the ingredients and marinade the chicken for 10-30 minutes.
Note: if you don’t have tomato paste, sub with 3 tbsp ketchup and include in the first step.

Step 3: Bake the wings to sticky perfection.

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°c. Lay the wings on a lined baking tray and bake for 30-40 total (depends on the size of your wings).
  2. At the 20 minute mark, flip the wings and brush the leftover marinade onto the chicken.
  3. Garnish with spring onions and sesame seeds.

– Be careful not to overbake or the chicken might dry out.
– The spice level was perfect for me as I don’t eat food that’s too spicy. You can certainly add more chili if you prefer spicier wings.
